Since the year 1967 people have been enjoying and playing the game of ultimate frisbee. While just hanging out, a group of college students came up with the pastime. Lots of people already played frisbee as a past time, but these kids wanted to make it a lot more competitive and entertaining for themselves. One of these students named Joel Silver transferred to another university in Lafayette in 1970. He introduced the pastime to the new friends he made at this campus as well.

It wasn't until 1972 that ultimate Frisbee competitions began taking place among colleges. In the early days of the college competitions, there weren't a lot of teams, but the trend continued and grew. By 1975 there were more than 20 college teams playing against each other. By 1979 things had grown so much that regions were drawn so that teams could play against those locally. The top teams would then play each other for the title of the year.

It wasn't just the university kids that were enjoying ultimate Frisbee though. By 1976 there were clubs all over the place, especially warm areas such as California and Florida. The beaches became a favorite place for people to not only enjoy the pastime and competition, but the weather as well. These games came to be very popular among spectators too as it was very competitive and they loved to unearth out who would come out on top.

The Ultimate Players Association was formed in 1980. They recognized the different teams that wanted to take part in ultimate Frisbee. Official ultimate frisbee rules were also set up by this organization by which were implemented by all of the teams and games hosted by them. The winners from these regional games would move on to the final round. The association would then recognize the winning team as national Ultimate Frisbee champions.

Today, Ultimate frisbee can be found spread out around the globe. It is still a sport that is extremely popular at the university level. Time has seen to it that there are still plenty of clubs that frequently play competitions as well. There are a number of high schools and grade schools that are providing the sport for their students as a form of physical fitness in their P.E. classes. Many students develop quite a love and interest in the sport through these young introductions to it. They go on to join the clubs and college teams as they locate older.
