Dealing With Repossessions On Your Credit Report

Right now there are many individuals who have poor credit such as repossessions showing on their credit report.  The recent economic slump has just made difficulties like car repossessions and other credit problems more frequent.  If you have had a car repossessed and the derogatory listing is showing on your credit report, what can you do?

Technically, if the listing is based on fact you are not supposed to be able to get it deleted from your report.  Nevertheless, you can frequently at least upgrade the status of the repossession by consulting the original creditor and making agreements with them where they will list it as paid or allow you to give an justification.  It is also viable to get it deleted if it is not completely correct and you may need to be unrelenting with your disputes in order to do this.

Most poor listings are meant to stay on your credit report for a period of 7 years.  As long as it remains on your credit report it can affect your credit score and your credit rating, though, the longer it has been since the difficulty the better off you are.  Time does recover your credit score.

If the listings are mistaken or inaccurate in any way you may be able to get it deleted by disputing it.  You will need to write a letter stating your case and why the listing is not truthful.  Make sure that you keep very painstaking records because after receipt of the dispute letter the credit bureaus have 30 to 45 days to substantiate the accurateness of the listing or if they cannot, they must delete it from your report.

It is entirely possible to do credit repair on your own or there are also professional credit repair businesses that can help you.  The process can become very complex and time-consuming so if you have a full-time job and a full-time life, you may consider it worth your time to appoint a specialist.  It is not necessary but it may save you a great amount of time and energy.

Every type of derogatory listing can be removed from a credit report.  This includes repossessions, tax liens, even bankruptcies and foreclosures.  If you try to do credit repair and you are not successful the worst that can happen is that your credit report will stay the same but you could also improve your credit score and rating which can be a major advantage.

Most people will need a good credit score at some point in their lives if they need to get a home mortgage or a car loan or credit card.  Your financial circumstances will only benefit from doing credit repair.  As you are repairing your credit, it is important to keep any new credit as perfect as possible so that when your past problems are repaired you don’t have new problems.

If your financial circumstances have improved and your income and your work are stable, it can be very helpful to repair your credit.  It certainly can't hurt and it may help.
