Avoiding A Bad Web Host
Try googling and you'll find a huge amount of business web hosting horror stories. Businesses who don't realise they are being hosted by a teenager. Wondering why their website hosting and emails suddenly disappear off the face of the earth, and why the host is not looking at emails (well they won't be able to!) or any phone calls. And the cause being? Little Alex has been grounded for getting a detention and had his computer taken away as well. Ok, so my hypothetical situation sounds a bit far fetched doesn't it? Again, have a Google- there are far worse situations where webmasters have found themselves in a whole world of hurt. Why? Well they ended up picking the wrong web hosting company. There might not be a foolproof way of weeding out bad hosts, I'll provide you a few tips on tell-tale signs of a bad website hosting business.
Hosts website has no contact address.
Without a contact address starts to break the distance selling laws in the UK. What good company wouldn't provide a postal address to send a letter to in case of a problem? Any buissness which has not given a mailing address sounds like a bad bedroom web host.
Claiming to own multiple datacentres, when they don't.
I preffer to do buissness with companies that are honest, we at least try and be as honest as they can. You own a little independent store, would you then try and claim you had a chain of shops nationwide. This is the same for web hosts reckoning to 'have' their own datacentre. Some hosts for example claim they are running a datacentre, where as their whole system runs on one managed dedicated server.I can tell you as a fact that only a tiny proportion of hosts have the time and the resources to run their own datacentre. Not owning your own datacentre isn't neccessarily a bad thing. But for a web host to begin claiming these things when they do not is never good.
How long does a bad host take to respond to their emails?
With email being the choice of communication in the electronic age. You have a few questions about the service you would want to send off an email with your queries in and get a response back to your inbox. So say a company did not answer the telephone, would you do business with them? Likewise if a hoisting company takes over a day to answer a email that does not look good. If they take that long to answer a sales email, when they can potentially earn money, how quickly will they respond when you need help? That said, don't be fooled by the web host that responds to sales emails within minutes, but when you really do need help, couldn't care less.
How does the English sum up?
Generally, a big indicator of the professionalism of a web host, is their spelling and grammar. You have no doubt come accross websites with wrongly spelt words who claim to be the 'garetest' web host on the 'word wipe web'. What if your host can't take the time to spell check their website or has not the ability to spell, the spiel they want to sell to you with, how can you trust them with your website?
So how do I find a good web host?
There are however a few trustworthy uk business class hosting companies. We have only just touched the top of the iceberg on spotting a poor web host. Choosing a web host is very very difficult. When you are look for your quality buissness class web host, please make sure you do the homework. Look on the internet for reviews and where possible speak to other customers of theirs. Google is a fantastic tool for dishing the dirt. Also try searching the company, you never know what might come up. Above everything else, when you come to pay make sure you pay monthly as you can walk away if it goes bad, and if the sticky stuff does hit the wall, make sure you have backups. Good luck.
