How Do Cashpoint Scams Work?
It is easy to become a victim of debit card fraud at women's shoes shops as well as at cash point machines without knowing. How do you know that this ATM you are about to use is safe to use without becoming a victim? Do you purposely protect and cover your pin when using cash point machines, but how do you cover your pin and who do you cover it from? Well guess what, it can so simply happen to you.
Do you know if you cover your pin right? I usually think about who is standing behind me at the ATM machine. Do I feel vulnerable that someone is going to distract me when the machine gives me my cash? I have never been suspicious of using the machine and believe it is perfectly trustworthy to use. Yes I couldn't see them and wasn't even mindful of anything.
The cash point machine looked absolutely alright, when out looking for a pair of Vans women's shoes, just similar to all the other machines I had used previously and everything was ok then. I went ahead and used the machine but my card was not given back to me.
I did not know what to do now that my card had been kept by the machine. The machine didn't have a number on it to call for any help when you encounter problems. The telephone number to report and cancel your card in an emergency is on the back of the card which was still in the cash point so that was no assistance at all.
The card was stuck in the machine but I couldn't touch it. If you find yourself in this situation be on your guard that you could become a victim and suffer a loss, Somewhere there will be a camera craftily hidden in the top part watching down to the keypad where you insert your pin.
Yes whoever, is watching you and part of this scam, will likely be familiar with your pin number unless you covered it. If you have a friend with you or nearby, try and get their attention and ask for them to get assistance, find phone numbers but ensure you do not go off the machine and it is left unattended. With your pin number and card these scammers are able to use it at other cashpoints and keep using it until they have reached the daily limit, [or] all the money is taken from the account or the bank cancel it and put a stop on its use.
The best thing you can do is hang around at the machine. You want to examine and fiddle with the machine, particularly where the card is placed, is there any extra or removable covers?
Cashpoint fraud is committed by placing an additional cover over the card insert hole with a little card flap which then prevents your card coming out of the machine. It maybe best to force the card back into the machine rather than risking somebody pinching it at a later time but ensure it is pushed all the way back into machine.
The top area may also have an extra magnetic strip on it with a little hole to record the movement over the pin pad. A very tiny camera or mobile phone camera can simply be hidden to record your pin.
You could report your opinion that the cash point has been played with to the police who should be able to offer you help and assistance.
To make sure you are not likely to become a victim and not be inconvenienced in this way, make sure you are aware to using the ATM machines.
