What To Do With A Windfall
Sudden wealth; it is the thing that many people's dreams are made of. There are few of us that haven't dreamt of a win on the machines in Vegas or a huge jackpot win, though a sudden injection of cash can come from any direction, including bonuses at work, or an unexpected inheritance. And as good as these are, it can be difficult understanding exactly how to manage it.
Of course, the natural reaction is to head out and immediately treat yourself; whether it is a holiday home in the Dominican Republic, an iconic supercar, or the latest 50 inch plasma TV. It all really depends what your personal circumstances are of course.
Well, having bought all the gifts for the family of course; as Christmas approaches for example, it is likely the kids will definitely want the latest PS2 Transformers game for example! But before it all goes, it is well worth having some advice.
The advice needed will depend a great deal on the amount of cash of course; but whether it is a few thousand, hundreds of thousands, or millions; it should still be sought. It is worth remembering that money can cause as many problems as solve them a lot of the time.
As discussed above, the natural reaction is to go a spending spree. However, this is not the best policy. And as hard as it is, taking time and really calming down is the best way forward. Indeed, many would say that simply putting the money in a bank account, and waiting for six months or so is good.
Take some time to make a list of what is really important. Debts are likely to be something gotten rid of straight away for example, but also planning for the future is key. Many people will take early retirement too, in which case, looking at investments to provide a retiring income could be an idea.
But there will still be problems. Taxes you have to pay will inevitably rise, whilst you will be besieged with requests for money. This is bad enough, but the feelings of guilt and anger you will feel can be destructive too.
The immediate sense of relief and joy when a windfall occurs is great, but these feelings will wear off and it is worth waiting for this to happen before any major decisions are made. We all plan what we would do with huge amounts of cash, but when it happens for real, it is vital that there is proper planning with responsible advice.
